Conditionals are sentences with two clauses – an ‘if clause and a main clause – that are closely related.
There are 4 main types of CONDITIONAL sentences in English

Use:
• To describe a hypothetical situation or event in the past. The past situation or event is contrary to known facts, i,e, it is an unreal or impossible situation.
If you had been more careful last night , you wouldn't have broken your leg.
